BACKING - Heavy, protective fabric secured (with latex glue) to the underside of hooked rugs. See "scrim cloth."
BANDED BRAID - Wide bands of solid or multi-colored braid form a consistent pattern which remains constant from one rug to another.
BINDING – Protective strip or band stitched over rug edge to decorate and strengthen it.
BLEND – Multiple fiber types make-up the composition of a single rug.
BORDER – A decorative outer edge surrounding an inner field of solid color or prints.
BRAIDED RUG – A reversible rug, formed by sewing a single rope of braided yarn or fabric into a spiral.
CARVING – Details of knotted, hooked, and tufted rugs are hand-carved, adding depth and dimension to mono-chromatic rugs.
COMBING – Pre-spinning preparation which pulls wool through spiked combs/blocks, organizing carded fibers in a parallel arrangement.
CROSS-WOVEN – Horizontal loom weave which accommodates the use of more colors and results in more pliability than found in standard, vertically woven rugs.
CUT PILE – Hooked yarn loops, once pushed through a canvas, are cut to create an open pile leaving a soft, smooth, evenly finished surface. See “velour pile”/”velvet pile.”
DELUSTER – Creation of a softer appearance via a washing treatment which removes the sheen from yarn.
DENSITY – Quality measurement determined by both pile height and yarn quantity; the higher the density, the more plush the rug.
FIBERS – Elongated natural or synthetic thread-like filaments capable of being spun into yarn.
FIELD – Interior of a bordered rug which may feature a print, pattern, medallion, or solid color.
FLAT BRAID – Two parallel cores anchor yarns braided around them.
HARD TWIST-CUT PILE – Twisted yarns, heat set at high temperatures to increase durability and stiffness, thereby minimizing flattening.
HEAT SET – Fiber strengthening process that uses heat to treat twisted yarns in order to increase durability.
HOOKED RUG – Design is created by pushing yarns through a canvas, then pulling them back through to form a pattern.
KNOT – Tie-off of each individual yarn on the underside of a rug. Quality is determined by the number of knots per square inch.
LINE COUNT – Total number of knots in the horizontal row of a linear foot.
LOOM – Device used to keep warp strands tight during the weaving and knotting process. Looms may be mobile or fixed; horizontal or vertical.
